ONU Men's Soccer vs Kenyon
This past weekend for ONU Men's Soccer showed two promising performances to take them to 2-0 on the season with a win against Kenyon and Oberlin. The atmosphere at both games were electric and you could feel the passion between the teams as they compete for a victory.
The Kenyon game felt like a movie. Home season opener and under the lights on Kerscher was all of the motivation the boys needed to go out on the pitch and compete. As the first whistle blew, the fans erupted as it signified the start of a new campaign and a fresh start. The flow of the game was very intense as bodies were flying around the pitch trying to cause turnovers and get in good opportunities to score. Kenyon was the first team to punch in a goal early in the first half to put us on our heels and give us a wake-up-call. After the first goal, the game was more intense and the Polar Bears were eager to equalize. Not too long after the first goal, Gage Foster was able to catch the Kenyon defense sleeping and earned the Polar Bears a penalty kick. To equalize the game, senior captain Will Shaffer kept his composure and buried the penalty to score the Polar Bears first goal of the campaign. After the equalizer, the game opened up more and we were able to earn more quality scoring chances. We were knocking on the door for a while to try and break the deadlock. Finally, in the last few minutes of the first half, the Polar Bears earned a corner kick. Alex Shaffer played the ball to the top of the box where his brother Will Shaffer was eager to strike the ball. The fans grew silent as the ball was curving into the top left corner and then pandemonium ensued within Kerscher. The Polar Bears were able to enter halftime up 2-1. The whole second half was the Polar Bears dominating possession and creating multiple chances. It wasn't too long after the whistle that junior captain Brenden Gervers hit a free-kick from 35 yards out and iced the game by smashing it top left corner. Everyone around Kerscher couldn't believe what they saw. The environment was uncontrollable. Finally, in the last few minutes junior winger Ryan Sommerfeld slotted the ball home on another penalty with five minutes left in the game. The final whistle sounded and it was an exceptional performance from the Polar Bears. They were only looking to continue the momentum into the next game against Oberlin.
Go Bears!
I was at the game and I agree it was electric. It was awesome seeing so many people come together and support me. I get it though. I mean after all our soccer team is very good.
