Nate and Nate Podcast with Bryan Gottron
Today, Nate Hecker and I got the privilege to speak with my Dad today about the ins and outs of business and social media. He works for Duro-Last Roofing as a manufacturers representative which ultimately means he is self-employed and he works as an independent representative. His job revolves around selling products to different roofing contractors and roofing distributors around Ohio. My Dad received his civil engineering degree from The Ohio State University in 1996. He shortly after got the opportunity to work for them as a representative for the western Ohio area. He has now been selling roofing products and contracts for over 27 years. He says, "My favorite part of the business is that everyday seems to be unique." He believes that getting to meet new people and figuring out new roofing problems is what makes the job so enjoyable. Bryan works with multiple different manufacturers so it keeps him on his feet and allows for more variety in his work.
My Dad has never really been into social media personally. However, he is aware that many manufacturers that he works with use social media to promote products. He is a frequent user of LinkedIn because he enjoys building his network of people and can find new contractors to potentially do business with. He talks about the differences in the older generation and the younger generation and how social media is more prevalent in the younger generation and it is important that the older generation finds a way to advertise, and promote products digitally. He goes on to say Duro-Last is still trying to figure out ways to promote products to manufacturers and gain more clients. Duro-Last is working on trying to find the right frequency of posting their content and what kind of content to post whether that be educational videos, new projects that they are working on, or the promotion of products. He explains that Duro-Last does not partake in paid advertising. However, the manufacturers and contractors that he works with utilize paid advertising a lot and he is able to benefit from their advertising. He stated that he attends a lot of trade shows so "at the local level" he has smaller forms of advertising.
Overall, this podcast was very educational for Nate and I and I hope if you give it a listen that you will enjoy what my Dad had to say. You can find the link to the podcast below.
