Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Media

As a part of my Principles of Social Media class we are assigned to post weekly blogs about our readings within "Essentials of Social Media Marketing" provided by Stukent. This textbook has plenty of information regarding the ins and outs of social media marketing. However, I wanted to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of social media. There are many advantages that social media offers including, using multiple social media platforms to reach a broader target market, making it easier on brands to promote their products and their brand itself, and higher conversion rates. Social media marketing is extremely important in this generation because billions of people around the world have multiple social media platforms which allows brands to reach consumers in many ways. Social media allows brands to also use online advertisements to generate ad revenue for the company which I think is a key factor in many companies around the world.

Although there are many advantages to social media, there are some flaws within the crevices of social media that some people might not be aware of. Some of these disadvantages include, brands being susceptible to negative feedback, there are risks of security hacks or viruses, and the social media platforms need to be monitored all the time. In recent years, there have been many cyber attacks and hacks happening which can hinder a brand to be successful and lose valuable content. Many brands that have social media platforms encounter negative feedback on advertisements, posts, etc. I think that is one of the more prevalent disadvantages that happens within the social media world.

Social media is growing everyday and there are always new users gaining access to different platforms. I think learning the basic advantages and disadvantages of social media are key to digging deeper into the art.
